Alternative to Incarceration Training

The Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Training Institute is a 3-day training designed to equip grassroots faith and neighborhood organizations with the tools to develop effective community-based alternatives to incarceration for youth.

The training consists of 10 modules where participants learn the fundamental principles behind successful interventions and program design. On the last day of the training, participants spend a full day program planning and thinking strategically about their programmatic interventions and effective system-community partnerships, while getting individualized coaching from CCFY’s program specialists.

Learning Topics

Session 1: A Broken System

Investigates the current state of the juvenile justice system and its impact on communities of color.

Session 4: Risk, Needs, & Strength Assessments

Teaches participants the importance of risk and need assessments and how to conduct asset-based evaluations that build on youth and community strengths.

Session 7: Essential Program Components & Helping Youth Change

Reviews essential components for programmatic success, such as comprehensive case management, youth development, referral networks, and family engagement.

Session 2: A Walk Through the Juvenile Justice System

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Session 5: System Partnerships

Analyzes the costs and benefits of formal partnerships with juvenile justice agencies as participants learn to avoid “net-widening” approaches that inadvertently deepen justice system involvement.

Session 8: Common Pitfalls of Program Design

Identifies common mistakes made by community-based organizations developing programs for youth in the justice system.

SESSION 3: What Works? Evidence-based Interventions

Examines the history of rehabilitative interventions for youth so participants can apply best practices to their own program designs. This session will get participants to work through the interventions best suited for their program.

Session 6: Accountability & Reporting

Explores the responsibility of ATI programs to balance youths’ needs and rights with community safety as participants learn tools for reporting on youth progress and compliance.

Session 9&10: Interactive Program Design

Participants use the knowledge accumulated to finalize and polish their ATI program design. Feedback and coaching helps participants prepare to present their program models.
