Community Connections for Youth’s Family and Community Organizer, Jeannette Bocanegra, attended her first meeting of the Juvenile Justice Oversight Board (JJOB) for the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) on September 23rd of this year.

According to Commissioner Richter’s August 16th invitation, “the JJOB oversees the rights, safety, and well-being of youth in ACS detention and placement sites. The Board’s primary goal is to assess whether ACS and [its] providers are responding to the needs and protecting the rights of young people in [its] juvenile justice programs.”

Ms. Bocanegra has been a consistent advocate for greater transparency around the
city’s juvenile justice facilities. She is eager to represent the many parents and grandparents who daily worry that their children may not be receiving the support and care they need and deserve. Often these parents fight for information with limited results. Ms. Bocanegra will be a voice for these families, using the Board’s access to detention and placement facilities to make sure that all New York City youth are being treated with compassion.

The JJOB will meet quarterly to discuss its findings with ACS leadership, make
recommendations, and annually issue a public summary report.
