JEANNETTE BOCANEGRA AWARDED “LO MEJOR DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD”
Comité Noviembre has honored Jeannette Bocanegra, CCFY’s Director of Family Engagement, with the “Lo Mejor de Nuestra Comunidad” Award. Through this award Comité Noviembre recognizes individuals who are the unsung heroes of the community. The award honors Puerto Ricans whose pride in their heritage and strength of character have empowered themselves and inspired others to make an impact on our community.
We at CCFY could not be more proud of Jeannette or believe there is anyone more deserving than her for this award. Jeannette is a tireless advocate for families impacted by the juvenile justice system. Driven by her own experience as a mother of an incarcerated youth, Jeannette took the initiative to create programming for families at CCFY that sprang directly from the needs and concerns articulated by family members. They took these same concerns to juvenile justice leaders and facilitated a shift from a paternalistic approach to families, to one that built on the strengths of the people most impacted by the juvenile justice system. She has been retained to serve on the NYC Juvenile Justice Advisory Council and also on its subcommittee on Family Resources. She continues to serve on the Close to Home Oversight Committee, and is frequently consulted by system stakeholders on best practices for engaging families.
