YOUTH TALENT STEALS THE SHOW
YUCA hosts The Mix on 146th – a showcase of local teenagers’ poetry, music, dance, and visual art
On a cool Saturday morning, young people from Mott Haven joined professional artists to prepare for a fabulous talent show. William Acevedo, Founder and Executive Director of the YUCA Arts Program, facilitated the youth-led planning process that included designing graphics for promotion and organizing a variety of performances. As guests streamed in to the Mott Haven Reformed Church, they were greeted by beautiful posters announcing The Mix on 146th and a vibrant display of youth artwork. One of our own SBCC participants proudly displayed his photography work on the wall – he has been attending YUCA for over a year.
The afternoon’s performances included a variety of spoken word pieces, dance choreography, and live music. The teenagers who took the stage proved their courage by sharing their passion for artistic expression with the community. Each child conquered the fear of performing to grace the audience with his or her creativity and promise.
This event is just one of the many positive development opportunities available to SBCC participants through its neighborhood partners. The Betances Community Center offers an innovative Youth Leadership Academy, and Friends of Brook Park operates a year-round Urban Youth Farm.
